Principal Smith

Welcome to Mustang country and to the 2019-20 school year! My name is Patricia Smith and this is my 9th year as Principal at Desert Vista Elementary School. Every year I reflect on how wonderful it is to be a part of such a dynamic learning community and to work with such wonderful families, students, teachers and staff.

My journey to be an educator began many years ago when I was a volunteer, youth coach, and an academic advisor for Chapman University. I decided that teaching was my passion and chose to pursue education as my career path. I have been in education for over 22 years and have served in our district as a teacher, Math Specialist, and Academic Coach at Peralta Trail and Gold Canyon Elementary Schools.

My philosophy on education is one that believes in working together to provide excellence inside and outside of the classroom. I am often asked why I wanted to become a principal and for me it’s quite simple, I love bringing out the best in others. There is no other motivation greater to me than being a part of a strong learning community that values the partnership of educating children. My favorite quote is by Helen Keller, “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.” By building a strong partnership together, we are investing in each child who attends Desert Vista Elementary and preparing them for opportunities for year 13. The greatest payoff from our investment will be excellence demonstrated inside and outside of the classroom and reaching our goals where there are no limits to what can be accomplished. EVERY child is important and deserves to have a safe, nurturing, and positive learning environment; it begins with us working together.

"Aim Higher, Dream Bigger" is our theme this year at DVES. We need to always remember that there are no limits to what we can do, however it takes hard work and a true belief in oneself. When the staff returned this year, I asked them to think about what will it take to reach new heights; our connection was to the excellence seen with the Navy's Blue Angels. Here is what we believe it takes and are commited to: GOALS, FOCUS, TRAINING, PRECISION, TEAMWORK, LOYALTY, PASSION, DEDICATION, AND COMMITMENT.  We don't give up and when others say CAN'T, we say CAN!

DVES is a BE KIND school, as well as demonstrating our Mustang PRIDE each and every day.

I believe that when we establish expectations for academic achievement and the promotion of character inside and outside of the classroom, we create a learning environment in which EVERY student is capable of succeeding.

There are several ways you can help your child succeed:

    • Ask your child what their favorite part of their school day was
    • Encourage your child to become organized with their school materials
    • Establish a quiet homework area
    • Read with your child and discuss their favorite books
    • Keep in contact with your child’s teacher(s) and monitor their grades on ParentVue
    • Come to school activities
    • Participate in the Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO)
    • Participate in the AZ State Tax Credit program by redirecting your state taxes directly to DVES
    • Volunteer! Teachers and the school always need your help!
I look forward to a great year!
